Odawara Castle is known as the residence of the warlord Hojo clan during the Sengoku period, and its historical significance and magnificent appearance attract many tourists.
The castle was built by Hojo Ujitsuna, and the Hojo clan ruled the Kanto region during the Sengoku period. Odawara Castle became the political and military center of the Hojo clan. As the Hojo clan expanded their influence, the castle was enlarged, and it was strategically positioned with robust defensive structures, including strong walls and turrets.
Odawara Castle has a structure centered around the main keep, with white plaster walls and black tile roofs as its distinctive features. From the top of the keep, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and coastline. Inside the castle, there are wide gardens, moats, and gates, offering a glimpse into the lives of the warlords and the function of the castle during that time.
However, Odawara Castle also became the stage for fierce battles over the dominance of the Kanto region during the Sengoku period. After the fall of the Hojo clan, the castle was captured by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later became the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The current structure was rebuilt during the Edo period and is carefully preserved as a valuable historical site, reflecting the tumultuous history of Japan.
Odawara Castle is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and within the castle grounds, there are museums and exhibition rooms. Visitors can stroll through the castle while immersing themselves in history and culture, enjoying the impressive architecture and scenic views.
Odawara Castle is an important part of Japan’s history and a well-known tourist destination. Its grand appearance and historical value make it beloved by many people.
